During the Paris 2024 Games, fans from around the world gathered in specially created fan zones to share the excitement of the games and celebrate together. The Netherlands hosted their TeamNL House in the iconic Le Zenith concert hall in Paris, offering Dutch supporters a place to unite and to celebrate their top athletes during the event. To elevate this unique fan experience, Orb Amsterdam and Ocean Outdoor collaborated to create a stunning WebXR activation that brought the Dutch Olympic spirit to life on a monumental scale, powered by Niantic 8th Wall and Niantic VPS.

Creating an Immersive Fan Experience:

At TeamNL House, Dutch fans not only watched the games on a giant screen and enjoyed live shows, but they also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a special XR experience that transformed the facade of Le Zenith into one that celebrated Team Netherlands. This activation allowed fans to connect with the Olympic spirit in a way that was both interactive and memorable, amplifying the energy and pride of the Dutch community in Paris.

Mapping a Large-Scale XR Experience

One of the most significant challenges in creating this experience was the precise mapping of the XR content to the expansive facade of Le Zenith. While Niantic VPS for Web is typically designed for 10-meter locations, this project required a solution that could scale up to match the size of the concert hall. To meet this challenge, the Niantic Team worked closely with Orb Amsterdam and Ocean Outdoor, leveraging an updated version of our VPS that supports large-scale locations, enabling the accurate scanning and mapping of the XR experience onto the building. This collaboration allowed for a seamless and precise XR experience that aligned perfectly with the architectural features of the building, resulting in an immersive experience that captivated fans and enhanced their overall experience at TeamNL House.

Opening New Possibilities with Large-Scale XR

This project not only enhanced the fan experience in Paris, but also opened up new possibilities for large-scale VPS activations. With the success of this project, Orb Amsterdam and Ocean Outdoor are now exploring opportunities to use this VPS on other iconic buildings, starting in Amsterdam. Future plans include creating additional WebXR experiences, including gamified interactions using the new Niantic Studio, which will continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with WebXR!
