What’s new in Niantic Studio: Enhanced tools for WebXR creation
Latest update to Niantic Studio brings new 2D UI controls, FBX file support, and 3D model support.
Niantic Studio’s public beta keeps getting better as we continue to roll out new features and improvements. With our September updates, we’re excited to introduce expanded 2D UI support, the addition of FBX and TTF file support, and enhanced asset control editing for complex 3D objects. These updates give you more control, flexibility and ease when building in Niantic Studio, no matter your experience level.
Optimized 2D UI editing for mobile and headset experiences
This month’s key highlight is our enhanced support for building and refining 2D elements. Now, you have more granular control over how user interfaces are configured and optimized for mobile and headset experiences, with the ability to place 2D elements—like buttons, images, and text—precisely in both 3D space and absolute space. This flexibility allows for more versatile UI layouts and better adaptation across different devices.
In the new 2D UI builder, you can fine-tune elements such as color, borders, text, opacity, and more. The builder also allows you to combine multiple 2D elements on a single canvas to create compound 2D graphics and interfaces. For even greater efficiency, you can now edit and modify these elements in real-time within the Studio Viewport, with changes instantly reflected in the Simulator.
This enhancement speeds up development and eliminates the guesswork, giving you a visual and intuitive way to rapidly fine-tune the user interface during the design process. The result is faster iterations and a more streamlined workflow, helping you create seamless, immersive experiences across devices.
All-new FBX and TTF file support
We’re also excited to announce Niantic Studio now supports uploading both FBX and TTF file formats. Widely used in gaming, film, and visual effects, FBX is a go-to format for storing 3D geometry and animation data. With the latest updates to Studio, developers can now upload FBX files directly into Studio, streamlining the import process and making bringing 3D models into Niantic Studio easier. FBX file support allows you to focus on creating, rather than configuring.
In addition to FBX support, we’ve also introduced support for custom fonts with TTF file uploads. Simply drag and drop your TTF file into Studio to instantly use it in the new 2D UI builder. This gives you even more flexibility when designing interfaces, ensuring your branding and typography are exactly how you envision them.
Enhanced support for 3D models
To further enhance your creative options, we've added new support for previewing and configuring your 3D Models. With our updated Asset Previewer you can check your model in different lighting settings, adjust the pivot point, and change mesh compression settings and scale. These updates allow for greater customization of 3D objects, offering more flexibility when crafting detailed WebXR experiences.
Continually enhancing your WebXR creation tools
These September updates are just a highlight of what we’re working on to give developers the tools and capabilities they need from Niantic Studio. Whether you’re creating 3D web games, WebXR experiences, or something else, we hope these features help you quickly create the powerful WebXR experiences you’ve been dreaming of.
